Dedicated Circuits - True Cost

The Situation

Yesterday I got a call from a potential customer in Sonoma County who was looking to get a new dryer.  They called to get an estimate on how much it would be to get a dedicated circuit for their laundry room.

After some quick questions, we realized that budget-wise we weren’t even in the same book!  From what they described it sounded like a $2800 job, and they were anticipating $400.  Needless to say, after some more questions, I wished them well with their project and hope that they find someone that’s a better fit.  They even told me they might see if they can get a gas dryer instead!

That got me thinking, how much does the average homeowner know about dedicated circuits

Dedicated circuits are fairly common; essentially it puts a high electrical pulling appliance/device on its own breaker.  This allows the device to have a steady power supply.  Most often you’ll see dedicated circuits for A/C and heater units, washer/dryer, and electric car chargers, but you can run a dedicated circuit for anything you’d like.

True Cost

The price to do this varies highly based on what you want to run, and how far wire needs to be pulled from the main electrical panel.   Whether your appliance is inside or outside, and where you want the wire to be will also greatly affect the cost.  For instance, it’s aesthetically pleasing when all the wires are hidden inside the wall, but what many homeowners might not realize is that while electricians are prepared to cut the holes where necessary, the repairs are not something we are trained on.  Of course we try our best to make even cuts and do small patches, but major repairs, painting and texture will need to be completed by another trade.  This can often be an unexpected additional cost that isn’t considered when creating a budget for this job.

Running a dedicated circuit can be anywhere from $500 - $3600.  The lower end are for low AMP, close to the main panel jobs, while the high end are for across property wire running, high voltage jobs.

So there you have it.  Dedicated circuits vary highly in price.  For a free estimate, give Royal Electric a call today.
